Purpose and Meaning

Primary Purpose: Baptism at Breakthru Church is for believers who have accepted Christ as their Savior. It signifies a public commitment that their old way of living without Christ is dead and buried, and they are now united with Christ, raised to new life with Him (Romans 6:3-6).

Definition of Baptism:

  • Declaration of Faith: Public statement of faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Union with Christ: Symbolic act of identifying with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.
  • Spiritual Purification: Washing away of sins and beginning a new life in Christ.
  • Yielding to God: Act of love, obedience, and trust, allowing oneself to be immersed in water by another person.
  • Inclusion into God’s Family: Celebration of becoming a child of God.
  • Sign of Salvation: Indicates the believer has received the gift of salvation through God’s grace.

Scriptural Basis: Romans 6:3-6, 11, 13; Colossians 2:12-13; Galatians 2:20.

Process and Ceremony

During the baptism ceremony:

  • Participants: The minister and the person being baptized.
  • Procedure: The person being baptized makes a public declaration of their faith and is then fully immersed in water by the minister, symbolizing their union with Christ and new life in Him.

Requirements and Preparation

  • Eligibility: Baptism by immersion is for those who have believed in their heart and confessed with their mouth that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10) and have committed to living their life in service to Christ.
  • Preparation: The person being baptized needs to read and fill out the baptism information form.

Spiritual Significance

Baptism is an important step for every believer and is viewed as a sacred public declaration in front of the church community. We believe baptism is not considered necessary for salvation, and that infant baptisms are not in the New Testament. Instead, baptism is reserved for those who can consciously make a commitment to Christ.

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Before Baptism: Complete and submit the baptism information form.
  • After Baptism: Being part of a local church is encouraged as it helps believers live out their life for Christ in His community.
