Baby Dedications at Breakthru

We're excited you're considering dedicating your baby. We've put together some information that will explain the purpose, spiritual significance, and requirements for baby dedications.

What is a Baby Dedication?

A baby dedication is a special ceremony in which parents:

  • Acknowledge their child as a gift from God.
  • Commit to teaching their child the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • Dedicate themselves to raising their child according to God’s will and Word.
  • Involve the church community in praying for the parents and the child, hoping the child will eventually place their trust in Jesus as their Savior.

What Happens During the Ceremony?

  • The minister invites the family to come forward.
  • The minister asks the family questions about their dedication and commitment to raising the child in the Lord’s admonition.
  • A blessing is prayed over the child and the parents.
  • Parents, siblings, and grandparents may participate in the ceremony

Requirements and Preparation

  • Parents must have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior and be living according to His will.
  • Parents need to register their child and fill out a form with family information.

Spiritual Significance

The spiritual foundation for baby dedication is based on scriptures such as 1 Samuel 1:11, 28; Psalm 127:3-5; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Proverbs 22:6; Deuteronomy 11:19; and Philippians 4:13. It is important to understand that:

  • Baby Dedication is Not Baptism: Our church does not practice infant baptism, as we believe the New Testament does not support this practice.
  • Baptism by Immersion: According to Romans 6, baptism is for those who have consciously decided to commit their lives to Christ, symbolizing their death to sin and resurrection to a new life in Him. Infants are not capable of making this decision.

Common Questions

  • Does my baby need a christening outfit? No, your baby is not being baptized, so a christening gown is not needed.
  • When can my child get baptized? Your child can be baptized when they have made a personal commitment according to Romans 10:9-10, believing in their heart and confessing with their mouth that Jesus is Lord.
